The only thing more embarrassing than having a Russian song about cars as your ringtone is having to explain to a curious Anglophone what the singer is saying.

"Well, see, this is a response to famous song "Black BMW", about how the white Mercedes is much better, and that girls prefer - look, you have to be Russian to understand it, okay?"

Question du jour. Senior citizens are occasionally portrayed in media as prone to petty theft (think shoplifting elderly tourists in My Life in Ruins and Uncle Leo and Jerry's battery-stealing parents in Seinfeld). Do you think this is at all a true-to-life portrayal, or a perfectly unfounded stereotype? Have you ever encountered shoplifting elderly folks?

For my part, I've gone a fair bit among older people, and have only encountered one who was prone to stealing. An older woman used to come cook for us when my mom was still a single mom with a full-time job, and she would always be stealing foodstuffs. And I thought... wow, if you're going to steal, at least have the decency to steal from the rich, not a mother of two struggling to make ends meet.

Secondly -- if you received a greatest hits collection by a fairly obscure (because foreign, but quite popular in his native France in the 60's) artist and it was a home-burned CD instead of one with proper packaging and bought in a store, would you think the gift-giver was cheap?
